God Judges Israel and America
“Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever.” Thomas Jefferson

The short, somewhat obscure Old Testament book of Habakkuk written around 600 BC tells the story of a man questioning God.  Like the corruption and injustice we often see in America and Israel today, Habakkuk observes the gross corruption of his country and asks God, why he does not act.

“How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?  Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?”

God had an answer for Habakkuk and he has an answer for our world today.  There came a day of judgment for Israel, a day when God used a foreign enemy as an instrument of his judgement and justice.

“Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.  I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwellings not their own. They are a feared and dreaded people; they are a law to themselves and promote their own honor.”

“And all the army of the Chaldeans, who were with the captain of the guard, broke down the walls around Jerusalem. And the rest of the people who were left in the city and the deserters who had deserted to the king of Babylon, together with the rest of the multitude, Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried into exile.” 2 Kings 25: 9-12

The prophet Habakkuk begins to understand:
“Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”

“The book of Habakkuk offers us a picture of a prideful people being humbled, while the righteous live by faith in God (2:4).  It reminds us that while God may seem silent and uninvolved in our world, He always has a plan to deal with evil and always works out justice . . . eventually.” - Pastor Chuck Swindoll

Do communist China, Russia and radical Islam represent the hostile powers that God is using to judge the West?  The similarities between the world of  Habakkuk from around 600 BC and the world of Bibi Netanyahu and  Joe Biden in 2023 appear hidden to all but those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.  Truly "Men have forgotten God".  But, to the sorrow of thousands of the grieving families, killed, maimed and humiliated today;   God's justice is active, omnipotent and unrelenting.  Who among the sorry diplomats, posturing politicians and impotent military are calling for the only effective solution; repentance and a return to God.

Could this be God's final judgement or is it just another cycle of decadence to despair.  Only history can provide that answer. What we do know is that God’s justice will always prevail and that: “The just shall live by faith”.  Pray that our people will  return to the only true source of peace.
