No one escapes the tension between our fleshly existence and the striving after righteousness that our Christian faith asks of us. When did any worthwhile endeavor in this life not demand effort, discipline and sacrifice? The appeal of cheap grace, easy believism or feelings of spiritual euphoria cannot exempt us from this struggle. Our brave new preacher.
Having recently moved, we were visiting around looking for a new church. We had just a few basic criterion; biblically adherent, bright mature pastor, growing congregation involved in the community: no hill for a stepper, right? We thought we found it; great preacher, great message, strong congregation, community oriented. What could go wrong? A few weeks in, a non-ordained, sweet young lady takes the podium to preach. Fail! Doesn't the bible have something to say about female preachers? We don't think it's an evolving document, dear lady, the same yesterday today and tomorrow. Back to square one.
Next outfit also looked promising, until we took the preacher to lunch. "We don't perform legal marriages anymore, danger of LGBTQ lawsuits, protests etc. " We send them to the courthouse JP for the legal stuff then do the Christian ceremony later." The word entropy describes an expanding system that continually builds upon itself until it becomes chaotic, eventually collapsing. The Ten Commandments becomes the 613 commandments of the Jewish law and devolves into hundreds of sects and denominations sinking the entire concept of the Word of God to irrelevance. As entropy engulfs the US and our leaders flail about for solutions, the lessons of history, the intent of our Constitution and the simple moral relevance of Christ's teaching to love God and our neighbor as ourselves have been quickly forgotten.

Following the Money in the Ukraine War

Finding optimism in NATO's support of the Ukraine war is no easy task given the Biden administration's bumbling approach and crumbling European support. Pew research tells us that 35% favored U.S. military action even if it risks nuclear conflict with Russia. Putin's strategy of terror, the atrocious war crimes observed in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, the discovery of mass graves, the terrorist tactics of abducting thousands of Ukrainian children, and the cutoff of gas supplies has so far failed but the pressure is ratcheting up. More than 60% of Americans supported greater aid, both military and humanitarian, for Ukraine. Neighboring NATO countries and the Ukrainians themselves remain hardened to the struggle.
U.S. and NATO policy so far has been to walk the line of diplomatic and military aid without risking a direct conflict with Russia while attempting to undermine Putin's credibility with his allies and patrons, both at home and abroad. This policy is not working. Sanctions targeting key Russian players, Biden tells us, take time to work, We have even put Putin's daughters and their banking interests in the cross-hairs of economic sanctions. These sanctions however have failed. Russia continues to rake in record oil and gas revenue ( $489.8 billion in 2021 ) Oil and gas revenues account for about 40% of the Russian federal budget. Putin's gamble in attacking Ukraine seems to be paying off as massive European protests in Russian gas dependent countries weakens NATO's resolve.
Only an addled Democrat could have expected Biden to win a death match game of chicken with Putin backed by China and their increasingly powerful BRICS coalition. Inflated US. fiat dollars facing off against Russian gold, natural gas, oil and developing commodity based trade paradigm.
Remembering history. From the 1960's Warsaw Pact post WWII days of Stalin and Nikita Khrushchev, communist despots have used oil and gas revenues to cover for their disastrous economic and collective farming failures. Communism took Russia from the world's biggest wheat exporter to buying bread from the west. Oil money, market manipulation and payoffs to corrupt dictators kept the Eastern Bloc in virtual slavery from the end of WWII until the $10 dollar a barrel oil prices of the mid 80's which put an end to Russia's ability to buy the loyalty of it's vassal states. An estimated 30 million souls died in Gulag labor camps along the way and, desperate to maintain his power, Putin's critics continue to disappear from the face of the earth.
Why the Russian rain of death in Ukraine? The answer is as old as humans have resided on the planet. Just go back to your dusty 2000 year old book called the Bible. It says that the root of all evil is the unrestrained love of money and the power it brings.
Ukraine has gas and bread. Gas is money; wheat is life. Recent discoveries around the Black Sea could make Ukraine a major player in supplying natural gas to Europe. The exact volumes of gas currently lying deep underneath the Black Sea are not yet known. Rough estimates predict that the Ukrainian shelf may contain more than two trillion cubic meters of gas. While the Crimea which Russia invaded and annexed in 2014 was the prime petroleum producing region of Ukraine, the Harvard International Review says that, Ukraine today holds the second biggest known gas reserves in Europe. As of late 2019, known Ukrainian reserves amounted to 1.09 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, second only to Norway’s known resources of 1.53 trillion cubic meters. Yet, these enormous reserves of energy remain largely untapped .
The other elephant in the room is Ukraine's competition with Russia for agricultural exports. Here is another money trail that Putin has been howling after like a Tennessee hound dog on the trail of a big fat coon. According to Germany's Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control, Ukraine's wheat production accounts for 11.5% of the world market, while Russia's share is 16.8%. When it comes to corn, Ukraine supplies 17% of the world's export market.
Oil and agricultural export money are the life blood of the Russian economy and continue to be Putin's most potent weapon in muzzling the response of the West. His dream legacy of a reconstituted USSR depends on its continued effective use. The stakes are astronomical for the future of Russia. Putin's recurring nightmare is that a pro-West Ukraine becomes a competitive gas supplier for western Europe and an enhanced agricultural trading partner. By limiting it's cash to coerce it's neighbors, Russia could become just another hobbled socialist has-been.
The forces arrayed against the people of Ukraine are legion. The objective of Russia is to plunder their resources and politically dominate the country or reduce it to a impotent puppet state. If they can overcome their own internal darkness and prevail, Ukraine could become an effective check on Putin's evil empire.
Behind the curtain of this East /West death match lies the specter of the Brave New World of the globalist utopia and China's ambition to dominate it. The real spiritual warfare is for the soul of the world. Pray that God will manifest his presence and open the eyes of our leaders to remember who made America great.
